I began my career as an Occupational Therapist in 2006. I have worked within the NHS and within the private sector. Most of my career has been spent in the specialist neurorehabilitation field. I have experience supporting clients along the rehab pathway, from the acute stage of their injury to slow-stream rehabilitation and long-term community rehabilitation. As such, I have been able to experience directly the long-term impact of brain injury on individuals and their families. My work has also incorporated working with highly complex clients with multiple diagnoses and neurological disorders.
This variety of experience has enabled me to enhance my understanding of the psychological impact of disability for the client and their family, the interchangeable effects comorbidities have on each other, and to be flexible and creative in his approach to intervention. Since becoming independent, I have developed an interest in working with Neurodiverse clients and have had success with clients who have a neurodiverse diagnosis and have had an ABI.
I am confident working with individuals affected by traumatic and organic brain injuries, including strokes and degenerative conditions. I am experienced in assessing and treating clients and planning and recommending future therapeutic interventions and equipment needs. I have experience in using standardised, functional and behavioural assessments to aid the formulation of goals around identified needs.
I use a range of person-centred approaches and techniques to overcome the cognitive, physical and behavioural difficulties associated with the client’s injury. I have extensive experience in training carers, families and therapy staff on individual rehabilitation programmes and therapeutic approaches. I am confident at working with clients’ subtle yet significant difficulties and can tailor my approach to maximise their rehabilitation potential.
Having led a therapy team and support workers within a private rehabilitation care home, I have gained valuable insight into factors influencing the care and support of an individual with neurological difficulties within different care settings, allowing an ability to see the bigger picture for all involved, which helps me tailor his approach to a multitude of different circumstances and environments.
